It's like deja-vu,

all over again.

I

t is no laughing matter. It is our worst nightmare. Most recently, two airplane crashes
have occurred from neighboring airports in our backyard.

A twin engine Beechcraft 76 crashed and exploded into a Pompano neighborhood
clipping the roof of one home and depositing parts of its fuselage and debris in three
other neighboring properties. The plane originated from a Pompano Beach Airpark flight
school located just west of Federal Highway. The Sun Sentinel quoted an air safety
investigator, Leah Read, "It's always a little crazy when you have an aircraft that crashes
into a heavily populated neighborhood." Harbor Village homeowners had complained
about the constant, low-flying air traffic over their homes to their Commissioners to no
avail. A few weeks earlier, a Cessna 206 originating from the FXE Airport enroute to
Bimini crashed into the ocean after the pilot reported engine problems.

Sound familiar? In the past, homeowners from the Landings, Lake Estates, Bay Colony,
Golf Estates and Imperial Point have formed a coalition to highlight our safety concerns
to the City. Flight schools and aircraft that are not maintained properly are two reasons
for the increase in the accidents. At the Imperial Point Association Airport Meeting in
2015, we asked for more inspections of the equipment flying out of the airport. The
next meeting should be advertised to all homeowners with plenty of notice.

Aging Water Pipe Lines

When the six-inch water pipe on NE 57th Street broke in our neighborhood and was
replaced by the City, we noticed changes in our water quality on adjacent streets.
A"weeper" was installed on a neighbor's lawn to deposit expensive City water into the
canal while we wait for the replacement of the aging pipes on all of our streets. The
City wants to review a water and sewer master plan which could take months. The
City is taking $20 million a year collected from residents' water and sewer bills and
using the money to cover other City expenses--instead of spending more to replace
aging water lines that are bursting nearly every day, the Sun Sentinel reported.

If you note any changes in your water quality, please call Mr Johnson (954 828
7809), City's Water Department.

Bees

A homeowner on NE 57th Street discovered a nest of bees which had arrived in the last
year. Please check your homes for a bee hive. University of Florida IFAS Department
says the best defense is a good offense. Removing or blocking potential nesting sites
around your yard and house reduces your risk of encountering bees at home.

To 'Bee-proof' a building: Remove all potential nesting sites; From March to July
(swarming season), inspect your property weekly for unusual bee activity; Seal all
gaps larger than 1/8-inch in walls and around chimneys and plumbing; Install
screens made of 1/8-inch hardware cloth over other openings, i.e. rain spouts, vents,
cavities of trees and fence posts, water meters, utility boxes, etc.

All the best,
