Commissioner’s Message
Dear Residents of District 1,
I
am pleased to provide you with an update on the outcomes of the 2025
Commission Prioritization Workshop, which took place on January 19, 2024.
During this workshop, we discussed and established key priorities that will guide
our efforts in enhancing the quality of life in our district. Here are the priorities that
we will be focusing on:
1. Public Safety: Ensuring the safety and security of our residents, visitors, and
workers is paramount. To achieve this, we will right-size personnel to meet the needs
of our city, improve police response times, and enhance efforts to recruit high-quality
police officers. Additionally, we will continue our city-wide gun violence prevention
John Herbst efforts and strengthen neighborhood relationships with law enforcement officers.

multifaceted approach. We will focus on reducing homelessness and dispersing
hotspots across the city. Partnering with service providers, exploring community
court options, and collaborating with county and hospital districts are among the
strategies we will employ to address this issue.
3. Affordable Housing and Economic Development: We recognize the importance
of providing affordable housing and creating economic opportunities for all
residents. To achieve this, we will enhance skilled labor opportunities, expand
affordable housing options, address food deserts, and revitalize key districts such as
Himmarshee. Collaboration with the county and evaluation of housing affordability
City Hall, 8th Floor criteria will be key in our efforts.

traffic congestion are essential for the well-being of our community. We will enhance
bike lanes, pedestrian safety measures, and explore options for sufficient parking
and New River Crossing. Additionally, micro-transit and multimodal transportation
options will be enhanced to provide convenient alternatives for residents.
5. Infrastructure and Resilience: Planning for future capacity requirements,
enhancing waterway quality, and addressing stormwater drainage and flooding
issues are critical for our city’s resilience. We will also expedite the Utility
Undergrounding Program, encourage commercial recycling, and prioritize tree
canopy preservation to bolster our infrastructure resilience.

resilient community for all residents of the City and of District 1. I encourage your
continued engagement and participation as we work together to achieve these
goals. Your feedback and ideas are invaluable as we strive to make our district the
best it can be.
