President’s Message continued
UPDATE: Disappointing news from the March 18 City Commission meeting. Bruce Quailey and I (Tim) attended, along with Chris Williams,
Doug Coolman and Mary Peloquin from the Coral Ridge Association. We all spoke against the project but our concerns were dismissed by
the Commission, who did not set a “de novo” hearing for the project. So it stands as approved, despite over 50 emails opposing the project
being sent to Mayor Trantalis and Commissioner Herbst in the 24 hours before the meeting. Takeaways from the meeting:
• The Commission felt there had been adequate public participation on the project even though Coral Ridge and CRCCE both
stated that we never met on the new proposed plan. Apparently there was a “public participation” meeting held that nobody
from CRCCE or CR attended. We really don’t know who attended it and there was nothing offered other than an affidavit from
the developer that the meeting was held.
• The Commission doesn’t think traffic on Oakland Park is all that bad and has no plans to mitigate traffic impacts.
• The Commission thinks traffic won’t be a a problem because the units are condos, even though they can be rented from Day 1.
• The Commission thinks the building is compatible with the surrounding neighborhood.
So we tried, but lost this battle. This will not be the final battle we will have to fight, as many more projects are on the way. It’s doubtful
we’ll win any of those battles based on what we heard from the Commission. We found out the Crexent site is being marketed for sale as
“entitled” and “shovel ready” — not true — and high rise projects are in the works on the Shooters and Bokamper’s sites. - Tim
