President’s Message
appy September. Welcome back to those who were out of town. Hope
everyone had a nice summer, maybe in a cooler place if you were lucky.
HFollowing up on last month’s column, I am again going to reprint a question
from a neighbor and answer it. The questions and my responses have been lightly
edited for clarity.
Q: “Thanks so much to the Board for the roundabouts on Bayview and the speed
cushions on the neighborhood streets. They seem to be slowing traffic down
somewhat. But we still see quite a bit of traffic cutting through the neighborhood.
Cars and trucks slow down when they go over the speed cushions but speed up
in between them. We need to push traffic out to Oakland Park, Commercial and
Federal, and off our neighborhood streets. Has any thought been given to adding
Tim Hernandez stop signs at more intersections within the neighborhood?
President
Tim: There’s a story here. For many years the Board has been trying to get more
stop signs installed. In fact, back in 2019, the Board surveyed all the intersections
in the neighborhood and provided the City of Fort Lauderdale a list of intersections
OFFICERS where it wanted all-way stops to be implemented. Here was that list:
Tim Hernandez 1. Burning Tree Dr (NE 35th Court) and NE 35th St
President 2. Bayview Dr and NE 47th St
3. Bayview Dr and NE 40th St

But it’s not as easy as one might think. All traffic control devices, including stop
signs, must be approved by both the City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County.
If there is not enough traffic to meet standards found in a document called the
Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), published by the US
CORAL R DGE Department of Transportation, to merit the installation of stop signs, the City and
COUNTRY CLUB ESTATES County typically won’t allow them to be installed. For years, the City claimed that
C OMMUNIT Y ASSOCIA TION Broward County was the problem.
