new cushion on NE 40th Ct. west of
Bayview, shown below). Please let us
know if there are other locations within
the neighborhood that you feel would
be helpful in slowing down traffic and
we can run them by the City.
Safety. With the FLPD Off-Duty Security
Patrol now up and running, we are
exploring other avenues to make the
neighborhood safer. We have begun
working with the City and private
vendors they have recommended
(Flock Safety, Vigilant and Recor) to
install license plate readers (LPRs) at
neighborhood entrances and exits.
According to FLPD Lt. Jeff Jenkins,
department detectives consider
license plate readers one of their most
important investigative tools. Use of
LPRS has become more widespread
in recent years as the technology has
improved. Lt. Jenkins says the City has
partnered with one vendor, Flock Safety,
in a one year Test and Evaluate Program
where LPR cameras will be installed
throughout the City. As part of this
program, cameras will be installed at
the intersections of Bayview and NE
32nd Street and at Bayview and
NE 49th Street.
Clearly, we have numerous (over
20) ways to get in and out of the
neighborhood off Federal Highway,
Commercial Boulevard and Oakland
Park Boulevard. It costs about $2400
per year per camera to install and
monitor the LPRs. Lt. Jenkins and
Flock Safety recommends having two
cameras at each entrance, one inbound
and one outbound.
The more we can increase Security
Patrol membership, the more LPRs we could install, as
future City funding is uncertain. More details on this subject
will be forthcoming, but we would like to hear about
any experiences with LPRs you may have had elsewhere
and where you think the best places to install them in our
neighborhood would be. Thank you!
