kona kottage
BY BRUCE KASSOVER
1961
The islets that line East Las Olas Boulevard are home to a multitude of luxurious residences, but few – if any
– of them can match the former extravagance of Kona Kottage.
All but forgotten today, Kona Kottage was once one of Fort Lauderdale’s most notable attractions. Built
atop an artificial hill on Navarro Isle, at what’s now 212 Gordon Road, the 4-story structure was the vision
of Loflin W. Smalley, an enterprising businessperson who capitalized on the growth of Fort Lauderdale
through the forties, fifties and sixties.
In 1961, Smalley and his wife Mildred commissioned architect Robert E. Hanson – today largely known
for his mastery of mid-century modern design – to bring to life their vision of a Polynesian wonderland.
Set along 210 feet of waterfront, the 4-story home featured three fireplaces, three waterfalls and, as so
many 1960s homes did, a bomb shelter. As striking as the structure itself was, the landscaping was equally
spectacular, with hundreds of orchids, palm trees and countless other species of tropical foliage.
Smalley himself became part of Fort Lauderdale lore in 1967, when he was found floating in the nearby
water. Drowning was listed as the official cause of death, but the coroner had found that he had been shot,
too, and the police classified his passing as a homicide. To this day, the crime remains unsolved.
A new owner purchased the home shortly thereafter, but he quickly grew tired of the steady stream
of visitors who would traipse along the property, steal orchids and peer into its windows. Over time, he
dismantled many of the home’s distinctive features and rebuilt it without the character that had made it
such a curiosity.
