Golf carts can be converted to low-speed
vehicles, and all such vehicles need to be
re-registered as such.
These vehicles must be registered, titled
and insured with personal injury
protection and property damage
protection insurance in place. The law
states that golf carts and similar vehicles
may only be operated on public streets
where the posted speed limit is 35 mph
or less, and must be equipped with the
following safety equipment: headlamps,
front and rear turn signals, stop lamps,
tail lamps, reflex reflectors that are red
with one on each side and one on the
rear, exterior and interior driver mirrors,
a parking brake, a windshield, a
seatbelt for each designated seat and a
vehicle identification number. These
requirements are not only for the safety
of those utilizing the golf carts, but it is
also to protect those using the golf cart
to avoid accident or injury.
All golf carts and low-speed vehicles are
required to observe normal and posted
traffic regulations, such as speed limits,
stop signs, one way street designations,
yield signs and the like. Golf carts are
not exempt from motor vehicle traffic and
safety regulations, and these laws will
continue to be enforced within Rio Vista.
Our neighbors are increasingly enjoying
the mobility and fun of using a golf
cart or low-speed vehicle within our
community because of the absence of
through traffic and the ease of utilization
to adjoining dining and shopping. The
Rio Vista Civic Association will work
with our residents and neighbors, as well
as the Rio Vista Patrol, in order to
balance the desire for recreational use of
these vehicles within
our community with
the need to enforce
legal and safety
requirements for their
use.
