Are Your Joints in a Pickle
over Pickleball?
By William Leone, M.D.
ickleball has become America’s fastest-growing sport and welcomes folks with
varying athletic and skill levels. As the number of players has risen, so have the
Pnumber of injuries. Common pickleball injuries include meniscus tears, ruptured
tendons and aggravated arthritis in the knees or hips.
Pickleball is played on a hard surface and players frequently make sudden stops,
rapid accelerations, turns and pivots. These movements, especially in older folks,
can lead to injury.
Unlike other sports, however, Pickleball attracts an unusually high number of
competitive players who are age 55 or older, with 42% of core players being over
65 years old.
A Journal of Emergency Medicine study found that nearly 91% of all pickleball
injuries occurred in players over the age of 50.
At The Leone Center for Orthopedic Care, I focus exclusively on hip and knee
replacement surgery. Over the course of my career, I have performed more than
15,000 hip and knee replacements on patients from all over the world who seek
my expertise.
Hip and knee replacements have proven to be two of the most successful surgeries
ever developed. At the Leone Center our patients are getting well faster and
