Commissioner’s Message
Dear Neighbors,
S ince being sworn in as your District 4 City Commissioner in December, I have
dived headfirst into connecting with the community addressing key city issues.
A few priorities I have been working on since returning to the City Commission
include seeking accountability and progress in our parks bond program, exploring
new methods to enhance water quality, long-term affordable housing solutions to
address homelessness, advocating for a tunnel as the New River Crossing for the
future of Broward’s Commuter Rail, finding innovative transportation and traffic
solutions, and increasing city responsiveness to neighbors.
The City has been making great strides and we recently cut the ribbon on the crucial
River Oaks Pump Station which will mitigate flooding. I have recently toured the
construction of our new water treatment plant - Prospect Lake which is on track to be
completed in September 2026 since the groundbreaking in January 2024. In addition,
construction at our new Police Department HQ is slated to be finished in September of
this year. I look forward to our first responders moving out of the temporary HQ on
Cypress Creek Road into their permanent home on Broward Boulevard.
In addition to my duties on the City Commission, I also serve on the Board of the
Lauderdale Isles Water Management District (LIWMD) and was selected by my
colleagues to represent the city on the board of the transportation planning agency,
the Broward Metropolitan Organization (MPO).
I’m thrilled to share that Fleet Week is returning to Broward from Miami Dade this
year! Please mark your calendars for April 22nd - 30th as the United State Navy,
Marine Corps, and Coast Guard will be at Port Everglades for Fleet Week Fort
Lauderdale. Go Navy!!
The City launched the FixItFTL app (available in the App store and Google Play)
last year as a streamlined and easy way for residents to report non-emergency issues
in the city. Whether it’s a pothole that needs filling, an area prone to flooding during
heavy rains, instances of graffiti or vandalism defacing public property,
malfunctioning streetlights, or violations of city codes, FixIt FTL is your all-in-one
solution. Visit www.fortlauderdale.gov/fixitftl to get started and download today.
Please reach out to myself or to our District 4 office anytime. My email is
bsorensen@fortlauderdale. gov and my mobile is 954.802.3311.
I hope to see you out in the community or at a City Commission meeting!
Ben Sorensen
District 4 Commissioner
